Acid Reflux In Children   


 

Acid Reflux in children is a serious issue that is often overlooked by parents.  This is unfortunate because we currently have the knowledge to help alleviate this pain and anguish and allow children to better control acid reflux disease through improved diet in acid reflux.  With this thought in mind, we have put together a list of tips that can help you determine if acid reflux symptoms may be occurring in your child. 

 

1.  Does the child experience pain and irritability?   

This is probably the single most common of the acid reflux symptoms but unfortunately it is often dismissed for other causes.  If you determine that your child seems to be experiencing chronic pain noticed through on going crying or irritability, your antennae should go up that acid reflux disease could be the cause.  The best course of action is to determine if other symptoms are present as well and if so, seek a check up from your paediatrician. 

 

2.  Does the child experience nausea or vomiting? 

If a child is throwing up frequently, this could be due to acid reflux because the child is regurgitating the excess acid in his/her stomach.  This is problematic because constant vomiting can cause damage to lining of the esophagus and it keeps the young child’s developing body from getting the necessary nutrients from food.  For this reason, you should take this symptom very seriously and should be a good tell for whether a doctor’s visit is warranted.  It is not hard to make manageable changes in the diet for acid reflux sufferers in children. 

 

3.  Does the child experiencing difficulty breathing? 

Many acid reflux sufferers have difficulty breathing because of the impact of acid in the esophagus.  This can create a temporary blockage or can even develop a longer term problem when scar tissue forms on the lining of the esophagus making it harder for air to travel through the wind pipe.  If your child experiences chronic coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing, acid reflux may be the cause.
